Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re new to counselling or just new to this space, here are answers to some of the most common questions parents ask before booking a session.

What can I talk about in a session?

Anything that’s on your mind. Many parents come with questions around parenting a neurodivergent child, emotional overwhelm, advocating for their family, or feeling stuck or unsupported. There’s no wrong topic here—this is a space to feel heard, not judged.

How long is a session?

Each counselling session runs for 60 minutes and is held online via a secure video platform.

What does a session cost?

Sessions are $150 per hour. There are no additional fees, hidden costs, or lock-in packages. Payment is due at the time of booking.

Can I claim sessions on Medicare or Private Health Insurance?

There are no rebates available for sessions with Indigo Wellness Counselling. However, the cost is comparable to the gap payable to psychologists and psychiatrists after you have claimed the Medicare rebate.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

No. Counsellors operate independently, so you can book directly—no mental health plan or referral required.

What’s the difference between a counsellor, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

Counsellors focus on emotional support, reflection, and helping you build insight and resilience. Unlike psychologists or psychiatrists, counsellors don’t diagnose or prescribe medication.

Nikki’s work blends evidence-based frameworks with lived experience—creating a space that’s less clinical, more collaborative, and always person-centred.

Are sessions online or in-person?

All sessions are held online, giving you the flexibility to attend from wherever you feel comfortable. You’ll be sent a private Zoom link after booking.

Do you work with children directly?

No—Indigo Wellness Counselling focuses on supporting parents and caregivers of neurodivergent children. The work is centred on helping you gain clarity, emotional strength, and tools to support your child more confidently.

Can I book a one-off session?

Absolutely. Some parents come for just one or two sessions to talk through a specific situation or decision. Others choose to work together over time. There’s no pressure either way—we’ll move at a pace that suits you.

What’s the free intro call for?

The complimentary 15-minute call is a chance to ask questions, get a feel for the space, and see if it’s the right fit—before committing to a full session. It’s casual, confidential, and completely obligation-free.

Will sessions be recorded?

No. Sessions are never recorded. Everything shared in counselling is treated with the highest level of confidentiality and respect. This is your space to speak freely, without fear of judgment or surveillance.

What qualifications does the counsellor have?
